“Today’s France could be called hydroponic France, interchangeable and standardized”

With “French metamorphoses – State of in infographics and images” (Seuil), Jérôme Fourquet revisits French society through a new, accessible and illustrated format. By condensing the analyzes of his successful trilogy, he offers an x-ray of societal changes, between archipellization and “hydroponic France”. First part of our big exclusive interview with the essayist.

Jérôme Fourquet publishes an illustrated book entitled French metamorphoses – State of France in infographics and images. This work, he explains, aims to offer a synthetic entry key to his previous works, his successful trilogy: The French Archipelago, France before our eyes (co-written with Jean-Laurent Cassely) and France afterall three published by Editions du Seuil.

In this first part of our major interview, accompanied by graphic extracts from the book, we question him about the potential paradox of this format: does it itself contribute, ironically, to the archipellization that it describes? Jérôme Fourquet also introduces us to a conceptual notion to understand these metamorphoses: that of a “hydroponic France”.

Marianne : Regarding the format of your book, which is illustrated: what can it bring?
