French Prime Minister Michel Barnier attends the question session to the government at the National Assembly in

The Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, was operated on this weekend for a cervical lesion, Matignon announced on Monday, specifying that “everything went very well”.

The results of this operation will be known within a few weeks and Michel Barnier resumed his work normally this Monday in Matignon, his services added.

The head of government will only resume his public activities with the council of ministers on Thursday, added Matignon, which means that he will be absent from debates and questions to the government on Tuesday and Wednesday in the National Assembly and the Senate.

Aged 73, Michel Barnier was appointed Prime Minister on September 5, two months after early legislative elections which produced no absolute majority in the National Assembly.

The government, weakened by the constant threat of a motion of censure for lack of a sufficiently broad base, is engaged in a complex battle in Parliament to try to have its draft budget adopted, marked by a desire to drastically reduce the public deficit.
