For three days, from October 23 to 26, the 51st national congress of the Herpetological Society of France was organized at the Charlemagne high school in Carcassonne. On the menu: conferences, workshops and discussions on nature.
From October 23 to 26, 317 delegates gathered at the Charlemagne high school in Carcassonne to participate in the 51e national congress of the French Herpetological Society (SHF) co-organized this year with the Aude Claire federation and the National Forestry Office (ONF). Three days of conferences, workshops and discussions around posters on herpetofauna, with a gala dinner on Thursday at the Ménestrel, closed with a morning of visits to the castles of Lastours or Pech de Bugarach on Saturday. Among lizards, turtles, snakes, frogs, toads, newts and salamanders, species from Europe, mainland France and overseas are scrutinized.
Speakers follow one another to present their work and analyses. In the context of global warming, chemical or pathogenic contamination and strong anthropogenic pressures, the actors present have actively contributed to the protection of species by improving knowledge followed by concrete actions. This will result, among other things, in national plans for endangered species and participatory science programs. The goal is the conservation of species and their living environments. As a reminder, following the observation of their decline, all indigenous species of amphibians and reptiles have been protected in mainland France since January 2021.
