Documentary Film Month at the Wallonie-Bruxelles Center – Wallonie-Bruxelles Center in Paris – Paris, 75004

The Wallonia-Brussels Center invites you to discover 6 films as part of Documentary Film Month! ■ Monday November 4 – 8 p.m.: “A life like any other” by Faustine Cros: (2022 – Belgium/ – 1h08) My father immortalized, in family films, the most beautiful moments of his life, while the difficulties of my mother hit the blind spot of her images. Today, I revisit these films to tell another story: that of a woman who sees her role as mother gradually taking away her freedom. ■ Tuesday November 12 – 8 p.m.: “Bodies and my battles” by Christophe Hermans (2023 – Belgium – 1h12) In October 2020, while hospitalizations due to coronavirus are constantly increasing, the second wave is at the gates of the Liège University Hospital , the main hospital in Wallonia, Belgium. Carine Thirion and Patricia Modanese, head nurses of the Covid and intensive care units, must face this new peak and manage their teams, still marked by the first wave. How will they cope with this new crisis when staff are understaffed, beds are lacking and the equipment is still not suitable? ■ Wednesday November 20 – 8 p.m.: “What binds us” by Sonam Larcin (2024 – Belgium – 1h08) While he wishes to have a child with the man with whom he shares his life, the director sets out to meet families . The film then takes the form of a personal odyssey, during which the director begins a reconciliation with his own father. What if it was enough to change one's outlook so that from an impossibility a field of possibilities was born? ■ Monday November 25 – 8 p.m.: “After the rain” by Quentin Noirfalisse & Jérémy Parotte (2024 – Belgium – 1h25) This is the story of a flood. This is the story of a crisis. The scar left by the floods of July 14, 2021 in the Vesdre and Ourthe valleys is still there. When it rains, the drops remind us of the dead and the rubble. How to rebuild yourself? From the daily lives of victims followed over a long period of time to the visions of the future of town planners responsible for proposing solutions, After the Rain tells the story of the aftermath of the deadliest climatic disaster in recent Belgian history. ■ Wednesday November 27 – 6 p.m.: Focus on Rob Rombout In partnership with the Dutch Workshop (Avenue Victoria, 1st) for the exhibition of photographs by Rob Rombout On the road – a traveling exhibition (from November 29 to 8 December 2024) > At 6 p.m.: Amsterdam Stories USA (Part 4: West) by Rob Rombout & Rogier Van Eck (2012 – Belgium – 1h30 – original version) Amsterdam Stories USA is a road movie that connects 15 North American provincial towns , all namesakes of the Dutch capital. From East to West – from arrival in New York, the former Nieuw-Amsterdam, to California – two directors of Dutch origin, Rogier van Eck & Rob Rombout, sketch a portrait of “small town America” following a single name. Operating like a sesame, the name of Amsterdam allows us to approach the reality and imagination of deep America. The result is an unusual representation of a little-known, intimate, sometimes strange America, where the filmmakers are also protagonists among many others. This 6-hour feature-length documentary is divided into 4 90-minute chapters: EAST – SOUTH – MIDWEST – WEST. > At 8 p.m.: In the footsteps of Robert van Gulik, a film by Rob Rombout (2016 – Belgium/Netherlands – 1h27 – OV stf.) Robert van Gulik (1910-1967) is perhaps one of the most read to the world. This diplomat, sinologist and scholar is mainly known for his detective novels in which Judge Ti is the hero. These books are in many ways projections of his own life, a dialogue between himself and his fictional character. This duality is also present in the film project: reality and fiction merge.
