Continental European Time has set the pace in Switzerland for over 125 years. According to the Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas), popular language is wrong when it speaks of winter time. So there is only summer time and standard time. With standard time, it gets dark again earlier in the evening. The time change has existed in Switzerland since 1981.

The change from standard time to summer time is controversial in the country and in the EU. In 2020, an initiative to abolish the time change failed in Switzerland due to lack of signatures. For its part, the European Parliament requested in March 2019 the removal of the time change in 2021. But to date the necessary decisions from a majority of states are missing.

Ukraine abolishes summer time

Ukraine has gone further than its European partners. According to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, this war-torn country will turn the hands of its clocks for the last time early Sunday morning. Summer time was abolished by law following a decision by Parliament.

Above all, it is about giving a sign of independence to Russia. This had introduced Moscow time everywhere in the Ukrainian territories it occupied. A time with which Ukrainian summer time coincided until now. In the future, the time in the two countries will therefore diverge by at least an hour, and even more depending on the different time zones in Russia.
