This Wednesday, October 23, in the premises of the Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA) of Doubs in Besançon, Olivier Cholley, stonemason, was awarded the departmental crafts prize, awarded this year to contemporary creation.
For the jury chaired by Manuela Morgadinho, president of the CMA du Doubs, this competition highlights all the know-how of the department's artisans: “It was difficult to decide between the seven candidates, as the pieces presented are technical and demonstrate that these professions know how to produce modern, magnificent pieces. It’s very, very good work.” Alongside the winner, six other artisans who practice their Art in the following fields: violin maker, cutler, carpenter, basket maker, engraver and turner.
“This award highlights my profession”
The craftsmen who competed in creativity to bring to life the materials they master perfectly. The winner of this 2024 edition runs the Art Décoroc company, based in Valentigney: “I am very happy. This prize highlights my profession which is no longer as attractive as we can do a multitude of things with stones.”
Carving, creating, taming minerals is a true passion for this 31-year-old craftsman. “After my CAP with the Compagnons, I did my tour of France and I returned to my father's company which I manage today. But my father still works with me,” says the craftsman. The part, finer cutting and shaping of exterior and interior decorations, completed its catalog.
“I want to show that we can do anything, be creative with all the stones. Céline, my partner, helps me develop this desire, which made me want to do this competition by presenting this lamp. » A series of slices of Burgundy stones with “burst” cut edges and its top shaped in a “leather” style. The piece took more than 20 hours of work. On December 16, Olivier Cholley will discover the joys of a new event: that at the regional level.
