It’s a “ unprecedented effort by law enforcement » within the framework of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, estimates the Loire-Atlantique prefecture which made this announcement by press release on Saturday May 25, 2024. This system was particularly increased in this department. The latter will host Olympic and Paralympic events for which the police will be required to secure the organized events.

Leave Restrictions

In Nantes, eight football matches are planned at La Beaujoire, including the arrival of the Egyptian men’s team which will face the Dominican Republic on July 24, then the arrival of the Israeli team on July 30.

State services indicate that this “exceptional presence” of law enforcement is possible thanks to leave restrictions. In total, 14,000 police officers and gendarmes will be mobilized throughout the summer period throughout France. In January, these leave restrictions gave rise to a national protest, with Nantes and Nazaire police locally denouncing “the vagueness” on the terms of their mobilization.

At this stage, the distribution of the reinforcements announced in Loire-Atlantique is not yet known. For comparison, in the summer of 2023 police emergency patrols had been doubled in Saint-Nazaire and La Baule. In the gendarmerie zone, 26 mobile gendarmes had been deployed. And until now nearly 70 CRS were mobilized each summer in Pornichet, La Baule and Pouliguen, including CRS rescue swimmers. Recently, the mayors of these three municipalities had also expressed concern about a possible absence of these same CRS on the coast due to the Olympic Games.
