Habits die hard, and it’s not Patrick Hermann who would say the opposite. Tuesday evening, the Green elected official took part in a debate to defend his last big issue before the end of his mandate in the executive of La Chaux-de-Fonds: the implementation of a new parking policy. And it is an understatement to say that of the hundred or so people present in the room, a majority were clearly opposed to the proposals which will be submitted to the people on June 9. Because in the watchmaking metropolis, which remains an El Dorado for motorists compared to cities of comparable size, the subject is more than emotional.

The purpose of this policy? Improve the quality of life of the 37,000 inhabitants and the attractiveness of the city while developing soft mobility and public transport. This by reducing internal traffic (excluding transit) – estimated at 100,000 journeys per day, or 65% of the total – and by limiting the possibilities for long-term parking in neighborhoods. Among the planned and well-accepted measures: the installation of parking meters in the city center and the generalization of blue zones in the rest of the municipality. What crystallizes the tensions is the modification of the macaron system introduced four years ago.
