The municipal community will meet from May 22 to 24 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal for the 102nd annual meeting of the Union of Municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) to discuss the main issues affecting their residents.

This new edition of the annual meetings of the UMQ will take place in a difficult context for the municipal sector where there are several elected officials who have resigned from their position.

According to the president of the UMQ and mayor of Varennes, in Montérégie, Martin Damphousse, there is a real feeling of solidarity between the municipalities.

“If you only knew how united the municipal community is. It helps us, because when we meet the Prime Minister on Thursday morning, the message will be clear,” explained M Damphousse in an interview with LCN.

The president of the UMQ wants the government to work in collaboration with municipalities to resolve various issues, including the housing crisis, homelessness and the climate.

M Damphousse also affirms that public transport remains a key issue for municipalities.

“Public transportation is a major issue. We need to find solutions, but in a lasting way. Minister Guilbault was very clear. She wants to find long-term solutions by this summer. She can count on the municipal community to find solutions together,” underlined the mayor of Varennes.

Martin Damphousse hopes that the presence of the president of Hydro-Québec, Michael Sabia, as well as that of the Minister of the Economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon, will make it possible to advance energy issues in Quebec.
