Morocco is actively preparing for the introduction of fifth generation (5G) internet services, marking a crucial step in its digital development. The Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administration Reform, Ghita Mezzour, presented the ongoing efforts during a speech in the House of Representatives.

In response to a question from the parliamentary group of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Ms. Mezzour detailed current preparations, which include the reconfiguration and release of frequency bands necessary for 5G. These actions are essential to enable effective deployment of fifth generation networks. Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites are also being connected with fiber optic links, ensuring a robust infrastructure.

The national strategy “Morocco Digital 2030” integrates 5G as a key element to modernize the country’s digital landscape. Ms. Mezzour emphasized that this technology will enable massive amounts of data to be transferred at much higher speeds, this data to be processed with minimal latency, and applications to be extensively used in smart homes, buildings, cities and connected vehicles. However, the deployment of 5G will require significant investments and suitable equipment, which requires a review of the current economic model.

Morocco, a candidate to host the 2030 World Cup, must guarantee 5G coverage in key locations such as stadiums, training sites and fanzones. Ms. Mezzour insisted on the importance of this initiative to offer an optimal connected experience to participants and spectators of this global event. This requirement is part of Morocco’s efforts to position itself as a leader in connectivity and advanced technology.

Morocco is moving resolutely towards the launch of 5G services, an initiative supported by the “Morocco Digital 2030” strategy. Ongoing preparations aim to create a solid infrastructure and adapt business models to accommodate this new technology. With a clear vision and well-defined objectives, the country is positioning itself to become a regional pioneer in the field of 5G connectivity, ready to meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities offered by this technological advancement.
