Matam – training in dyeing and saponification techniques: 82 women residents in the beneficiary mining areas

Nearly 80 women residents in the mining areas of Damga (Kanel Department) and Bosséa in the district of Thilogne, were trained in dyeing and saponification techniques thanks to the program for transparency and accountability in the extractive sector in Senegal from USAID-Traces. At the level of the district of Thilogne which brings together the municipalities of Dabia, Oréfondé, Thilogne and Agnam, 40 women who received their certificate declared having “the expertise and skills to capture market share of local content, by offering products to the mining company in charge of the future exploitation of the phosphate discovered in this area of the Matam department. A major wish that they share with their colleagues in the Damga mining area where 42 women benefited from the same training in dyeing and saponification techniques. One way, according to Daouda Diop, the coordinator of the USAID/Traces project, is to make them autonomous, by offering them the tools to be able to capture income from mining. A message well received by all the women who thanked civil society for the training carried out for them which aims to strengthen their empowerment. Intending to take full advantage of the teaching-learning received, they intend to work to have their own business by grouping together in a GIe, with “the fruitful desire to become suppliers by selling their products to the companies in charge of the exploitation of mines, to public establishments installed in the area and to local authorities”.
