Dordogne: an elevator to repopulate rivers with salmon

Have you ever seen a fish elevator?

It is one of the curiosities found in Périgord.

On TF1’s 13H you will discover this device which is used to repopulate the river with salmon.

For decades, it had disappeared from the rivers of Dordogne. But year after year, the salmon returns to the bottom of the rivers, a master of the waters built to go upstream, even the most powerful. But before returning to the natural environment, the king of fish flourishes in this fish farm, in the heart of the Dordogne.

The place is a site where salmon populations multiply. Because out of 1,000 fry born here, only one will survive in the wild. Nicolas, Maxime and Isabelle are doing everything possible to repopulate the Dordogne with salmon. And fish like these, slightly older spawners, have a strong character.

In the past, salmon populated all the rivers of Périgord, going upstream to reproduce. The construction of hydroelectric dams has cut its way. So here, for several years, everything has been done to help him overcome obstacles. After traveling thousands of kilometers from the North Atlantic, salmon can take the elevator.
