On this Ascension Bridge, the good weather is out, and so is the red. The sun’s rays bring the first blushes to the faces of visitors to the Vergers de Vendée in Saint-Hilaire-des-Loges (Vendée). But it is especially the strawberries which have taken on color in recent days and have become the queens of the picking. “We’ve been open for a week, it’s the strawberries that kick off the season,” indicates manager Pauline Rapeau.
The spring fruit is also accompanied by eggplants, cucumbers and even spinach. All these seasonal fruits and vegetables are listed on a large board at the entrance to the site: “To pick today”. Because here, it is the public who comes to help themselves directly in the fields or under the greenhouses. A way to eat at a lower cost: strawberries cost €5.80 per kilo.
