Montreal: a motorcyclist dies after crashing into a backhoe on the A-40

A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning when he crashed into a backhoe that was traveling at very low speed on Highway 40, in the west of the island of Montreal.

The accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. on Highway 40 East, not far from Morgan Boulevard, in Baie-d’Urfé.

For a still unexplained reason, the motorcyclist, aged in his early twenties, collided head-on with the rear of a backhoe which was traveling in the left lane, in the middle of a road work zone.

It is difficult to explain what the operator was doing at the controls of his large vehicle on the highway, while he was probably traveling at very low speed.

The motorcyclist had no chance during the violent impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the police covered his body, as well as his motorcycle, with a black tarpaulin.

The backhoe operator was not injured, but will be met by investigators in the coming hours to give his version of the facts.

Two out of three lanes of traffic were closed in the area to allow collision investigation specialists from the Sûreté du Québec to establish the cause and circumstances of the tragedy.

This closure obviously caused a huge traffic jam which stretched over several kilometers in the morning.
