Arnaud Sarazin conducts a cycle of conference monthly on the villages of the Community of communes of Brie Champagne within the framework of theLeisure Culture Space (ELC), this in alphabetical order so as “not to offend a mayor”, he specified. This Monday, May 27, it will be the turn of Rieux to be the theme of today’s conference. For The Briard Countryhe gives a taste of what he will present to the public.

The church in the center of the village

“The main point of interest of the town of Rieux is its church which has a magnificent Gothic choir,” says the speaker who impressed his audience a month ago by presenting the history of Morsains. “The latter, built during the 13th century, is distinguished from the rest of the building by its delicate fenestration: each of these bays is made up of two pointed arch lancets, which, separated from each other by a graceful foliage column , are surmounted by an oculus forming a rose window. As for the interior of the building, it is notable in particular for its rich furniture: stalls, 16th century virgin and child, 16th century bas-relief and painting, 19th century stained glass windows… This interior also lets us discover the magnificent elevation of the choir: above the blind arcades a Champagne passage develops: a passageway which runs along the bays of the choir and which we find in other buildings in the region such as the cathedral of Reims…”

Family history

Beyond the architecture, Arnaud Sarazin is also interested in the history of the families who left their mark on this village: “Not far from this church there originally stood a majestic castle (now destroyed): it was the residence in particular of a Protestant family: the Bourbers family. Rieux was also the home of the maternal family of one of the great romantic artists of the 19th century: Lamartine, who had the blue, white and red flag chosen during the 1848 Revolution to symbolize the resurgent Republic). »

Other notable points

This conference will also focus on highlighting the other remarkable points of the village. Here is an example: “Rieux also preserves as another heritage a most curious fountain: the Fontaine des Malades, probable vestige of a water Source originally reserved for lepers… Here is what we can say in a few words: words from the territory of Rieux, in the immediate vicinity of Seine-et-Marne…”

Arnaud Sarazin’s conferences go beyond history. They allow us to project ourselves into the future by specifying the historical base on which these villages rely. Not to be missed !

Entrance is free. It is possible to register for all conferences: membership fee of €17 is waived (association membership not included.)
