Avignon: choose the name of the city’s 59th school

How to call the new school in Avignonneighborhood Joly Jean ? Here, everything will be new: this district located south of Avignon is defined by the town hall as an eco-district with buildings that correspond to this designation; the school whose construction the City is currently completing; and even the way in which the name of this establishment will be chosen.

Avignon town hall offers to choose between nine names

Rather than giving it a name according to the wishes of elected officials, they turned to residents to ask them to make this choice themselves. To help them in this process, the town hall has still proposed nine surnames from which they can opt for the one which will become the name of the future school.

Another specificity: the names proposed are not those of a personality, but of a couple famous for having led an important fight.

Those who wish to express their preference have the choice between the two anti-pathei activists Winnie and Nelson Mandela, the scientists Pierre and Marie Curie, the philosopher and Minister of Justice Elisabeth and Robert Badinter, the two couples of resistance fighters Lucie and Raymond Aubrac or Mélinée and Missak Manouchian, the revolutionaries Lucile and Camille Desmoulins, the two volcanological explorers Katia and Maurice Kraft, the co-founders, with Jean Vilar, of the Avignon Festival Melly and Paul Puaux, and the spouses and civil rights activists and of interracial marriage in the United States Mildred and Richard Loving.

Residents of Avignon can vote online

To participate in this choice, simply go to the jeparticipe.avignon.fr platform, and vote for one of these nine couples. To get to know them better, an exhibition on their lives and their struggles is organized at 106 rue Carreterie in Avignon.

Once opened, this school will be the 59th in the city.
