Stuck in a mouse-infested home: a Montreal family’s nightmare

Father Adil L-Abbar says that every night, mice come out and disrupt the children’s sleep. The tenant points out the lack of insulation of the building and the lack of willingness of its owner to carry out work.

Upon visiting the home, Noovo Info noticed that a huge hole above the bathtub allowed mice to infiltrate.

Mr. L-Abbar deplores that these children are afraid to wash themselves because of the dirt and vermin.

The owner refused to grant an interview to Noovo Info, but he said he hired an exterminator to chase away the mice. But they keep coming back.

He promised to have the hole in the bathroom repaired and to bring in another specialist to find a solution.

For its part, the City of Montreal says it issued eight tickets to the owner and required plumbing work.

The owner responds that he is not the only owner to have problems with vermin in the neighborhood.

After verifying the owner’s statement, Noovo Info met tenants in the neighborhood who denounce the same situation.

“It’s the whole building. Mice are everywhere. It’s disgusting,” said a local resident.

There would be a problem with the trash cans on the street, which are placed full time in front of the buildings. Garbage overflows regularly.

“We can’t breathe. There is lots of garbage everywhere. We can’t sit on the balcony because there are so many flies and mice,” added a tenant.

For their part, Adil L-Abbar’s family registered in 2021 to obtain low rent. She is still waiting.

“For us, it’s impossible to move,” he concluded.
