REPORTING. Deshaies: olfactory nuisances from the Bas-Vent wastewater treatment plant

Water management is definitely the Source of many inconveniences in Guadeloupe. This time, there is a sanitation problem in Bas-Vent, in the commune of Deshaies. The sewage treatment plant is malfunctioning and dirty water is spilling into the street alongside the homes, some of which are rented to tourists. We went there; the pestilential odor emanating from the place sickened us…

For several days, when we go to the Bas-Vent section, in Deshaies, it is no longer the beauty and tranquility of the place that first strikes us; It’s the foul smell.
The culprit is the wastewater treatment plant: it is in poor working order. Result: wastewater overflows, escapes from the manhole and roams the street. With the help of the sun, the olfactory nuisance covers several hundred meters around.
The pollution also reaches a pond, then reaches the sea.

Residents, passing vacationers and users are going through an ordeal. This situation, which is dragging on, undeniably presents health and environmental risks.

However, the site had everything to please: a very well-rated hotel complex, beautiful villas, several of which are dedicated to seasonal rentals, uncrowded paths, a coastline and beaches that open their arms to lovers of beautiful views and water. turquoise.

The rigorous work is slow to be carried out.
As a reminder, to date, water and sanitation management is entrusted to the operator Eau’Nodis, through a public service delegation, in the commune of Deshaies. The municipality does not want operation by the Joint Water and Sanitation Management Union of Guadeloupe (SMGEAG), the cost of which is considered exorbitant, in particular.
However, the city is a member of SMGEAG and, according to the director of municipal technical services, this union must check the watertightness of the network, so that it is connected to the treatment infrastructure.

Before 2019, we had a first report. These are living networks. At any given time, you need to know how the network behaves. In the meantime, there may have been work, there may have been a certain number of things which would mean that the expertise of the time is no longer the right one.

Maël Douart, director of technical services at Deshaies town hall

The date of the next interventions has not been set. Consequently, delays are lengthening, to the detriment of local residents.
