Geneva: A car destroyed by flames in Charmilles

It was 11:39 p.m. on the night of Wednesday to Thursday when the Fire and Rescue Services (SIS) received the first call. Ten more followed. It must be said that the fire of a car, rue Joseph-Pasquier, in the Charmilles district, in the city of Geneva, was quite impressive, as shown in the video from our reader-reporter.

Five minutes after the alert was given, at 11:44 p.m., two vehicles and 9 firefighters from the nearby Asters barracks arrived on site. “The car was completely destroyed and a second vehicle parked nearby was damaged,” said First Lieutenant Nicolas Millot, SIS communications officer. The intervention ended at 12:26 a.m.

Since Wednesday, the SIS has not been idle. He carried out around twenty interventions by firefighters and around ten ambulances. Among them; a kitchen fire. Wednesday, at 11:49 a.m., in Presinge (GE), a fire broke out in the kitchen of an apartment, located on the ground floor of a building and occupied by a couple. “One of them was cooking when the oil caught fire. The flames spread to the hood,” explains Nicolas Millot. The man tried in vain to put out the emerging fire.

Fifteen firefighters and four vehicles, including an ambulance, intervened. They managed to bring the fire under control using two fire extinguishers. The occupant of the apartment suffered minor hand injuries. Eight people living on the upper floors were involved. They were examined on site. With the exception of one child who was taken to the HUG for a usage check. The apartment was destroyed and the couple had to be relocated.

What to do if the pan catches fire?

What to do if the oil in your food preparation catches fire? “You have to remove the pot or pan from the fire as quickly as possible,” says First Lieutenant Nicolas Millot. And try to cut off the heat Source and turn off the ventilation. “We can also try to put a large lid on the pan” to prevent the flames from spreading and reaching the hood. “The latter must be maintained regularly,” advises the communications officer. Otherwise, the filters may contain oil which could in turn catch fire.

In the event of splashing oil on the hands or on another part of the body, Nicolas Millot advises passing the affected part “under water at 15 degrees, 15 cm from the jet and for 15 minutes”.
