Initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the transport sector are increasing. Electric propulsion and the use of green hydrogen as fuel are therefore concepts that scientists and brands are striving to promote. In India, Bajaj Auto seems to want to take a slightly different approach. Indeed, the company is working on a CNG-powered motorcycle (compressed natural gas). If all goes well, it should be out before next year. You should know that unlike liquefied natural gas (LNG), CNG is obtained from a process which consists of compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. This is a fuel which has the advantage of being less expensive than gasoline while being less polluting.

An interesting concept

Through its various advantages, compressed natural gas constitutes an alternative to conventional fossil fuels, and it can be used to power our means of transport. For several years, transformation kits are thus available on the market, allowing certain gasoline vehicles to be converted to CNG. However, the approach taken by Bajaj Auto is one of its kind in the world so far as the company has chosen to equip its upcoming motorcycle with an engine that runs natively on such a gas. According to the firm, measuring the performance of a prototype showed that the design could reduce carbon monoxide emissions by around 75%.

Less polluting, cheaper to operate?

Furthermore, Bajaj would have observed a significant drop in CO2 emissions as well as NMVOCs (non-methane volatile organic compounds). As for operating costs, calculations made by the group would have suggested a reduction of 50 to 65% thanks to the reduction in fuel prices. In short, this is a project that could have enormous benefits both financially and environmentally. Regarding its specifications, we know that the bike should be a 110cc equivalent.

What about the design?

Although the brand is very stingy with information about its CNG-powered motorcycle, the design of the machine is no longer really a secret. Last March, the Indian media @rushlane even shared on X (formerly Twitter) a few photos showing a functional prototype, partially revealing its design. The two-wheeler would have 17-inch wheels with 80/100 tubeless tires. Its fork would adopt a telescopic design. Furthermore, there would be a single rear shock absorber as well as a semi-electronic dashboard. We also know that the motorcycle should be equipped with an LED headlight.
