For months, temporary foreign workers have been protesting against this change.

They are also protesting another policy change in the Manitoba Nominee Program (MPP) selection process, which prioritizes newcomers who have family ties in the province.

In a letter posted to social media on Tuesday, Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller said he was prepared to offer open work permits to newcomers whose permits expire in 2024, if they are employed in Manitoba and whether they are eligible for this program.

Manitoba can accept up to 9,500 applications in 2024. The province was allocated the same number last year, but was short about 2,000 applications.
