This spring, winegrowers Francis and Fabien Lapeyre of Château Lapeyre at Saint-Hilaire-du-Bois (Gironde), near Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, have chosen a traditional method to maintain their young organic vines.

Rather than using their agricultural machinery, they called on Juliette Bourdot and her draft horses to achieve the “ decavating“.

“Our Castets plants are only two years old and we must ensure their good rooting which can reach up to 10 meters, explains Fabien Lapeyre. Our machines, as gentle and precise as they are, inevitably compact the soil and prevent the roots from developing properly. »

Specialist in animal traction, Juliette Bourdot of “Traits de Gaia” intervened with her two maresa Boulonnaise and a dash of Auvergne to carry out this physical operation, but respectful of the young plants.

This has a price, but it is an investment for the future, for our children and our grandchildren, because a vine has a lifespan of around 40 years.

What is decavating?

Decavaillonnage consists of turning the earth as close as possible to the vine plants, in order to weed and aerate the soil to encourage deep rooting. Carried out by hand or with the help of horses, this work better protects the structure of the soil.

In addition to her wine, forestry and agricultural services, Juliette Bourdot also offers to host events such as marriages with his draft horses.
