In Drôme, the municipalities of Alixan, Chatuzange-le-Goubet and Saint-Marcel-lès-Valence joined forces to buy a mobile radar which they now share. The aim is to reduce speeding in the area.

Three municipalities but the same problem: speeding on country roads. Faced with this observation, the Drôme municipalities of Alixan, Chatuzange-le-Goubet and Saint-Marcel-lès-Valence have chosen to unite. Together, they acquired a mobile radar radar at the beginning of March. A shared equipment that they now share, in turns.

Municipal police officers, but also rural guards will be able to use the radar, with the aim of fighting against the scourge of motorists who drive ever faster. An agreement signed with the local gendarmerie brigades allows them to also benefit from this equipment on weekends. Equipped with binoculars, the radar can spot a speeding motorist more than 400 meters away.

We are peripheral municipalities of the urban area. We have developed with the pavilion, people who work outside. Our main difficulties to manage are speed, particularly traveling between home and work.” explains Christian Gauthier, the mayor of Chatuzange-le-Goubet. The radar represented an investment of nearly 7,000 eurosshared between the three municipalities.

Our common goal is to reduce the speed of motorists in general. In order to avoid having major accidents, or even people being knocked down.” explains Jean-Claude Duclaux, the mayor of Alixan. The objective is therefore for municipal agents to issue fines, but above all to raise awareness among residents by taking the time to discuss with them during checks.

The initiative was generally acclaimed by residents of the three municipalities. “I live on a straight line where people drive 130 kilometers/hour. So it’s still complicated to leave the house.” testifies a resident, reassured by the system. Same story from another Drôme: “JI find it good because the speed of traffic inside the villages is often very high”.

Since the beginning of the year, 11 people died on the roads of Drôme. A figure that had never been so high in 4 years.
