Two offenses are accused of the driver of the trailer which was hit by a train this Monday in Marssac-sur-Tarn. The level crossing where the accident occurred remains closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic during the work.

Following the spectacular collision that occurred on Monday May 6 in Marssac-sur-Tarn, between a regional express train and the trailer of a fairground worker stuck on a level crossing, an investigation was opened to determine the driver’s responsibility.

He is accused of two infractions: a trailer length that exceeds the regulatory maximum and the fact of having kept it on the level crossing when the train arrived. These are 4th class fines, indicates the Albi public prosecutor’s office. No offense was noted, fortunately the accident did not cause any injuries.

However, the material damage was significant. The town hall of Marssac-sur-Tarn announced the next day that “the movement of vehicles and pedestrians is prohibited by municipal decree on this work. The SNCF has erected construction site barriers to prevent crossing the level crossing. A diversion was set up by rue de Peyragues, the Lamartine roundabout and avenue d’Albi”. The town hall adds that “the repair work is estimated to take several days”.

The collision occurred Monday afternoon, around 4 p.m., while the fairgrounds were setting up in the town for the funfair scheduled for May 8 to 12. The driver was towing several trailers and stopped on the level crossing while lifting a nearby barrier to access his location. He was unable to complete his maneuver before the train arrived, which hit a trailer carrying gripper machines filled with stuffed animals.

Firefighters, police, SNCF and town hall agents attended the scene. The 65 TER passengers coming from Albi were taken care of by the SNCF via replacement buses. Rail traffic resumed the same day, early in the evening.
