The authorities fear an increase in the balance sheet. Since the start of the year, road accidents have already caused eleven deaths and 140 injuries in Drôme. As a long weekend looms, the prefecture announces strengthen road checks.

“The causes are too well known. We have the usual combo : speed, alcohol, drugs. Some continue to behave in ways that are unacceptable,” underlined the chief of staff of the prefect of Drôme, François Jouffroy, in an interview given this Tuesday, May 7 to France Bleu Drôme Ardèche.

Strengthening controls and sanctions

As the prefect of Drôme had already indicated on April 25, a strengthening of controls had already been put in place. In one year, road accidents have tripled on the roads of the department. “We are going to be present especially during this long weekend period, systematically on the main and secondary roads, so as to have a very strong presence in the Drôme territory,” also underlined François Jouffroy.

Punishments will also be harder to stem the scourge. “ We will have no tolerance for individual situations which sometimes require requests saying that there is a family or professional reason which justifies them keeping their vehicles,” he warned.

Awareness operation

An increase in the number of radars is also planned in the department, either at the initiative of the State or of the municipalities themselves.

This Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8, the chief of staff will be in the village of Léoncel to an awareness campaign from bikers to mountain roads.
