An envelope of 150,000 francs to do better than parasols

How can we adapt the city center to climate change while preserving its qualities? How can we guarantee good accessibility for all and support local dynamism? How to offer a welcoming place, while allowing the organization of one-off events? Four years after voting for a credit for equip the Church square with parasols for the summer season, these questions will be at the center of a participatory approach aimed at redeveloping the square and rue Centrale. On Thursday, the Municipal Council validated a credit of 150,000 francs in this regard.

“Central, this square happily brings together Avenchois and tourists. It is vast and surrounded by historic buildings. But the experiment with parasols was not conclusive. Their deployment is complicated,” explains municipal councilor Maxime Corthésy, in charge of the file. Without shelter, the place, very mineral, creates the effect of a heat island, just like Rue Centrale. The exercise should determine where to install street furniture or trees to improve everything.

In May and June

Under the direction of the OLGa office, based in Renens, the Place de l’Église will first be studied, with a first diagnosis set for May 16. This first session will bring together local stakeholders such as businesses or public establishments. From June 19 to 21, the public will be invited to a co-construction event of the test layouts, so as to make them their own.

The experience of using parasols to cover the Church square did not prove conclusive.

“For Rue Centrale, three variants will be tested over several months, starting this fall,” continues the municipal. Ultimately and according to the opinions collected, the Municipality should come back with a credit for the final equipment.

A few steps away, another tourist building will also have a new look, until 2027. After having renovated the southeast annex of the castle, the Municipality will be able to restore all its facades. A framework credit of 3.5 million was validated for this purpose.
