The La Vache cave, located in the town of Alliat, which had been closed to the public for 5 years due to work carried out by the town, has just welcomed visitors again. A few hours before this long-awaited moment, Marie-Florence Kalandadze, mayor of Alliat, invited Christine Téqui, President of the departmental council, Raymond Berdou and Laurent Subra respectively president and director of SESTA (Service d’Exploitation des Ariège Tourist Sites), Jean-Jacques Michaux, senator of Ariège, and numerous guests for the presentation of the renewal of the cavity, followed by a short visit organized in this jewel of prehistoric art.
Work carried out in three phasesThe first phase consisted of securing the site by installing blocks. The second phase aimed at preserving and promoting the site. This work benefited from scientific and technical support from the DRAC Occitanie and financial support from the State, the region, the department and the community of communes of the Pays de Tarascon. The third phase will consist of the construction of a reception building.
Management provided by SESTAThe municipality, owner of the site, has entrusted the department, through SESTA, as part of a public service delegation, with the operation and management of the cavity and the future reception building for a period of 9 years. The SESTA has set itself the ambition of implementing an educational and cultural project around a museographic concept of “Cave-Museum” as part of concerted work with the municipality of Alliat and the DRAC Occitanie. The department plans to allocate €100,000 to this as part of a multi-year plan.
