“He’s a weirdo who does that.”, Nanou despairs, pushing the gate of the cemetery onto the heights away from the town of Tourtoirac. Monday May 6, in the afternoon, a craftsman who came to repair the gate discovered tags on several dozen graves in the large village cemetery, according to information from France Blue Périgord.
Several dozen degraded graves
Dozens of graves were covered withblack spray paint inscriptions : “Allah”, “cowards”, “I hate you”as well as tags referring to political figures or news items. “Fifty” graves were defaced, according to the mayor of the town Dominique Durand. His own grandmother’s grave was defaced.
Tags had already been observed since December in the surrounding villages, on the calvaries of Saint-Pantaly-d’Excideuil, Cherveix-Cubas, Saint-Mesmin and Coulaures. A first cemetery had been tagged in Clermont d’Excideuil early March. “It’s the same as in other villages, particularly in Clermont”thinks the mayor of Tourtoirac.
“Don’t play the game” of the tagger
For two months, no tags had been observed. The series therefore seems to continue. Investigators and criminal identification technicians from the gendarmerie spent the afternoon on site. An investigation has already been opened following previous damagebut the prosecution, contacted in the evening, did not yet wish to say whether it made the connection with the new tags discovered this Monday.
Mayor Dominique Durand calls for “don’t play the game” of the one or those who tag : “What message are they trying to send? Is it provocation? We must remain pragmatic and wait for the police to do their job.”
