In the Tarn-et-GaronneTHE demographic and economic dynamics
are carried by the proximity with Toulouse : this is the conclusion of the latest study carried out by INSEE in the departement.

The population of Tarn-et-Garonne is particularly increasing near Toulousein the peripheral municipalities of Montauban and on the axis connecting these two cities: “Growth is almost twice as sustained in the Tarn-et-Garonnaise part of the catchment area of the city of Toulouse than on average in the department,” specifies the ‘Insee.

Four poles of attraction… and Toulouse

More than half of the inhabitants (54%) live in the Montauban area, 21% live in the catchment area of the four other centers present in the department (Moissac, Castelsarrasin, Valence and Beaumont-de-Lomagne) and 16% in the 29 municipalities which belong to the Toulouse attraction area.

If recent demographic trends continue, the population is expected to continue growing, but at a slower rate to reach 282,000 inhabitants in 2050.

A young department… thanks to the Pink City

Even if almost all of the municipalities in the department are rural, nine out of ten inhabitants live in the Urban Attraction Areas (AAV). THE Tarn-et-Garonne is the second youngest department in Occitanie after Haute-Garonne.

The department has 109 young people under the age of 20 for every 100 seniors aged 65 or over. The population is particularly young in the Tarn-et-Garonnaise part of the Toulouse catchment area (169 young people per 100 seniors) and to a lesser extent in those of Montauban and Castelsarrasin.

Nearly one in two young people aged 18 to 24 leaving the department is student. However, 5,600 young people continue their studies while continuing to reside in Tarn-et-Garonne. Half of them study outside the department, mainly at Toulouse.

Conversely, seniors are much more numerous than young people in municipalities outside AAV and to a lesser extent in the catchment areas of the towns of Beaumont-de-Lomagne and Valence.

The population is increasing, employment is growing

Like the population, employment increases in Tarn-et-Garonne. The department has had 27% more jobs since 2000. It is thus placed in 4the position of the departments of Occitanie where employment is growing the most.

The economy is moving more and more towards face-to-face activities, aimed at residents or tourists. However, tourist activity is less developed than elsewhere in Occitania. Employment linked to tourism represents 6% of market employment, the lowest rate in the region after Haute-Garonne and Tarn.

The table apple champions

In 2020, agriculture generates 6% of employment compared to 4% in Occitanie. Tarn-et-Garonne is the leading French producer of apples of table. It is among the top three producers of table grapes, notably with the protected designation of origin of Chasselas de Moissac. It is also on the national podium of producers of plums, kiwis and even melons and hazelnuts.

The department is thus in first national rank for the volume of fruit produced in 2020. Fruit cultivation is very consuming in water, irrigation and water resources management constitute major challenges for the department.

Industry resists the tertiarisation of the economy

THE Tarn-et-Garonne is home to 600 industrial companies in 2020, seven out of ten of which have fewer than ten employees as in Occitanie. In connection with the weight of agriculture, the agri-food industry is the most important industrial sector (23% of industrial employment, or four points more than at the national level).

There Golfech nuclear power plantwith just over 800 employees, IMSA (IT of the Mutualité Sociale Agricole) and International cookie (formerly Biscuits Poult) are the three largest employers in the commercial sector.

Aerospace takes off

In the wake of Toulouse, the aerospace sector is also developing. It generates 1.8% of non-agricultural commercial salaried employment in 2022. The Liebherr-Aerospace site, a satellite of that based in the Pink City and specializing in machining, should develop its Campsas site and strengthen employment of the sector in the years to come.

Only three establishments employ more than 1,000 employees, all located in Montauban and belonging to the public sector: the Hospital Center, the Town Hall and the Departmental Council.
