War in the Middle East – In Morocco, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs activates the “crisis unit” to ensure the protection of Moroccans residing in Lebanon

Following the recent tragic events in Lebanon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken measures to ensure the security and necessary assistance to the Moroccan community residing in the land of cedars.

The ministry attaches “primary importance to monitoring the conditions of the Moroccan community in areas of conflict, unrest and disasters”, underlines the text. A permanent crisis unit is in place within the ministry, activated if necessary. This system has already proven itself during previous crises, and it is now being mobilized to address the situation in Lebanon.

In this context, the ministry announced the immediate activation of this crisis unit to monitor in real time the situation of Moroccans residing in Lebanon, and to adapt its actions according to developments on the ground.

At the same time, the Moroccan embassy in Lebanon, under the direct supervision of the ministry, has also set up its own crisis unit. This is responsible for maintaining permanent contact with members of the Moroccan community, receiving their calls, checking their security and providing them with the necessary guidance to ensure their protection.

The press release specifies that the Moroccan embassy in Beirut has contact details for the majority of members of the Moroccan community living in Lebanon, thus allowing regular monitoring of their situation. However, the ministry admits that in a few isolated cases, certain individuals could not be located. It is possible, according to the ministry, that these people left Lebanon before the recent escalation or that they had moved to other countries several years ago.

The ministry also indicates that a significant number of Moroccans, accompanied by their families, left Lebanon before the outbreak of current events, in response to warnings and calls to leave the country.

Although the Moroccan community has been affected, like other groups, by recent developments in Lebanon, it has not been directly targeted by the bombings, underlines the press release which specifies that “thanks to its integration into the Lebanese society, family solidarity plays an essential role in mitigating some of the consequences of events.”

Regarding the Beirut region, where the embassy is located, the ministry headed by Nasser Bourita affirms that the Moroccan diplomatic mission, in coordination with the competent Lebanese authorities, has made arrangements to facilitate the accommodation of displaced Moroccans. For other Lebanese regions, similar points of contact have been set up with the central emergency committee, in order to coordinate the reception of Moroccan nationals in dedicated accommodation centers.

The press release added that the monitoring cells, both within the ministry and at the diplomatic mission in Beirut, are currently focused on the evaluation and preparation of various scenarios, depending on the evolution of the situation in Lebanon.

Finally, the ministry ensures that its services, in constant collaboration with the Kingdom’s embassy in Beirut, remain fully mobilized to provide the necessary assistance to the Moroccan community. The ministry is closely monitoring developments in the situation, ready to implement scenarios that will guarantee the security and protection of Moroccans residing in Lebanon.
