What the latest tears within Québec Solidaire reveal is that the political group has reached a certain degree of maturity and is at a decisive crossroads.

Those who want to rule

On the one hand, there are those who support the party and see it as more than just a protest movement against unbridled capitalism. Rather, they view Québec solidaire as a legitimate political vehicle with the potential to gain power. Proponents of this vision understand that along the way, we will have to be willing to make compromises and make decisions.

The revolutionaries

On the other side, there are the convinced leftists. Their goal is not to take power, but to always be right, in all circumstances. They are idealistic and do not want Québec solidaire to sell its soul to the devil to gain power. They reject what they consider to be an gentrification of the parliamentary wing of the party and claim to belong to the field, to the real world and to the real people.

The problem with GND is that it started with the second group and, over the years, ended up with the first. Throughout his activist and parliamentary commitment, he understood that convictions were not enough if we did not do everything to have the power to express them in public policy. It started as an old red square labeled radical and ended up, years later, with radical red squares of its own.

Risky bet

What to do, then? Give in to the diehards or bet on the search for power? The choice is not easy, especially since the risks associated with one or the other option are enormous. One thing is certain: maintaining Quebec in solidarity as a demanding left-wing movement, sometimes inclined to jovialism and radicalism, would recall the years of GND activism, particularly during the student spring. An image which was not always beneficial to him and which he managed to forget.
