A first in Switzerland, a study attempted to identify the role that parents play in the learning choices of their children, who are still minors when they complete their compulsory education. As detailed Sunday Morninga survey was carried out by education researcher at the University of Bern Stefan Wolter among 6,000 adults aged 25 to 60 from all regions of the country, with equal numbers of women and men.

In order to establish gender bias, 105 pairs of professions were composed from the approximately 240 professions offering apprenticeship places in Switzerland. According to the Sunday newspaper, the choice of professions was clearly gendered, with professions where the proportion of women is greater than 60% being considered as women’s professions and those where the proportion of women is less than 40% as men’s professions. Respondents had to decide, among two options, which apprenticeship they would recommend to a girl versus a boy. For example, for a girl: veterinary assistant or bodywork sheet metal worker, hairdresser or network electrician, pharmacy assistant or food technician. And for a boy: polygraphist or carpenter, community care and health assistant (ASSC) or polymechanic.
