The castaways were taken to Calais and looked after by land rescue services and the border police.

New rescue at sea this Saturday, May 4, early in the morning. According to a press release from the Channel and North Sea maritime prefecture, 22 people in difficulty were rescued off the coast of Calais.

The regional operational surveillance and rescue center (CROSS) Gris-Nez has engaged a rescue vessel, the Ridens, to come to the aid of the boat, which was trying to reach the United Kingdom. A helicopter is also involved and “flies over the area to ensure that no other person is in difficulty“.

The castaways were “deposited at the port of Calais” And “supported by land rescue services and border police“, further indicates the prefecture.

On April 30, seven people were also rescued. The previous week, five migrants, including a little girl, died after a stampede when boarding. A tribute was paid to little Sara in Wimereux this May 2.

Crossing attempts have resumed with a vengeance since the start of the year, and 2024 marks a trend significantly higher than previous years, with 8,278 migrants detected by the British “Home Office” as of May 1, i.e. more than 2,000 more than ‘in 2023 and 2022.

In March, around ten migrants were hospitalized after aborted crossings, involving 200 people. The associations which help them, such as Osmose 62, had denounced a “climate of violence” on the part of the police.
