Hello, I would like to know the steps to take to purchase a vehicle in Ontario.

Could you tell me more?

Hello Louise,

If you are purchasing from a merchant, be aware that you will have to pay the taxes applicable in Ontario, in addition to paying all those applicable in Quebec during the transaction with the SAAQ. However, you will be able to fill out a form that will allow you to recover the taxes paid in Ontario, which will be refunded to you approximately one month later.

If you are buying from an individual, you will only have to pay the Quebec sales tax, which is 9.975% of the sales price. However, if it is a vehicle over 25 years old, a professional evaluation carried out by an approved Quebec appraiser will be necessary for the transaction. You will therefore pay tax on the higher of the two, namely the sale price or the assessment price.

In all cases, a mechanical inspection will be mandatory to be able to register the vehicle in Quebec. You will need to budget around $125 for this inspection, which must take place at an agent of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec. If there are repairs to be carried out, they will obviously be at your expense, and you will then have to undergo a second inspection (at a lower cost), in order to obtain your certification document necessary for Quebec registration.

Finally, if you make the purchase from a dealer, the latter can issue a temporary registration allowing you to drive the vehicle to your home or to the inspection center. However, in the case of a sale to an individual, and in the event that the latter does not authorize you to travel with their own registration temporarily, you will have to obtain a temporary permit issued by the SAAQ which will authorize you to travel, but only in the direction of the inspection center. So you technically won’t be able to use the vehicle for anything else, although this temporary registration is valid for four days.
