The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) – Chilleurs-aux-Bois refuge is organizing open days on Saturday May 4 and Sunday May 5 following the national campaign.
To reach more people, the national open house campaign of the Animal Protection Societies (SPA) is carried out by children. The idea is always to raise awareness about responsible adoption. Like every year, the SPA – refuge of Chilleurs-aux-Bois takes part. “Currently, we have adoptions for cats but for dogs, it’s complicated,” explains Cécile Godeau, team leader.
And for good reason, the shelter is observing a drop in dog adoptions and an increase in the number of their abandonments. “We take in impounded dogs, dogs from people in an urgent situation. For example, a single elderly person who dies and who had a dog… Currently, the care time for dogs is two months.”

As of April 30, the shelter had 37 cats and seven cats placed in relay families and 67 dogs. During a period, part of the refuge, in particular the roof, was under construction. Which explains the lower number of dogs for this shelter which can accommodate up to 80 or even 85 dogs.
Entertainment all day long
“For these open days, we hope that the public will come in large numbers.” On this occasion, several activities will punctuate the day such as games for children, a temporary tattoo stand, the presence of Bertille de Couasnon, osteopath for animals, a dog trainer from the Educaway company, the Anim’o’parc company which offers natural treats for dogs and cats as well as introductions to canicross with the Canicross Centre-Val de Loire, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. “Some of our dogs will be paraded at 3:30 p.m. and there will be a positive training demonstration.”
