Premiere of “There was time!”: comedian José Gaudet reveals himself in his first show

At 53 years old and after more than 30 years working in the comedy industry, José Gaudet presented his very first solo show, It was time!, at Place des Arts, Monday evening.

“I couldn’t have done like guys my age… get shingles,” he said upon his arrival on stage at the Fifth Room, where he had invited members of the press as well as of the artistic colony.

The Big Mouth with his particular laugh offered an old-fashioned stand-up in which he delivered himself with complete humility and with a lot of self-mockery about the difficult mourning of his youth and the control he had over his burps, which now come out at any time when he speaks, but also on his urine flow which is now expressed in Morse code, in drops and in several jets.

“Since I was 50, I have been disintegrating […] Earlier, I didn’t make a sound checkI took a nap,” he said with disgust, adding in passing that he had a stiff neck because he had slept for two days in the hotel without his pillow and that he had torn the meniscus “while swinging to get out of the pool.”

Drawing on his experience over the last 30 years in the comedy industry, this first solo show is well put together, rhythmic and easily hits its targets. José Gaudet’s face and his very colorful way of telling his anecdotes captivate and hold the attention of the audience, who laughed very loudly all evening.

In addition to sending a few barbs to his sidekick Mario Tessier, whose laughter transcended the Fifth Room, he also planned a number, quite effective, about his parents, notably describing his father as a confident man, with the attitude of Tom Cruise as Danny DeVito, who could carry on a half-hour conversation without using a single verb and who was obsessed with Patrice L’Écuyer and showbiz gossip.

Moving from one subject to another seamlessly, the co-host of the return to Rythme show also addressed the “clash” of generations between boomers and X-ers, but also parenthood and young people today. today, his aversion to extreme athletes who put themselves in danger to feel alive – and of whom he is above all jealous –, cosmetic procedures and his hair transplant.

“I was tired of being mistaken for The Rock,” he told his audience, with a smirk.

“Hello, it’s me Enrique”

At the end of the presentation, José Gaudet brought some of his legendary characters from the Grandes Gueules back to life. He notably invited the charming singer Enrique Iglesias, Jean Charest and José Théodore.

The comedian directs it, but has surrounded himself with Isabelle Laperrière and Sylvain Rouillier to be supported in the writing of his texts. He also received advice from his friend Laurent Paquin for the artistic direction.

José Gaudet will be visiting the Odyssey in Gatineau and the Salle Albert-Rousseau in Quebec City on October 25 and 30. He will then continue his tour until at least next year.
