Construction sites on several highways and bridges: detours to plan this summer in the greater Quebec region

Construction sites on Highway 20 in Lévis, on Highway 73 in Quebec, on the Pierre-Laporte and Quebec bridges as well as on the Félix-Leclerc highway will give headaches to motorists in the Capital region. National until this fall.

The Ministry of Transport (MTQ) presented to the media Thursday morning all of the major projects planned for 2024 as well as the obstacles planned for their completion.

Four sectors are attracting the attention of the MTQ: Autoroute 20 in Lévis between Avenue Taniata and Route du Président-Kennedy, the interconnection between Autoroutes 20 and 73, the Laurentian Autoroute whose exits will be closed in the sector from rue de la Faune and the head of the bridges.

“[Ce secteur] will require a lot of closures this year, particularly for the Quebec bridge,” argues MTQ spokesperson Émilie Lord.

In this sense, the repair of the road deck on the Quebec Bridge will begin in August until October 2024. Complete closures of the bridge are planned, particularly on weekends, but the dates are still to be determined.

The MTQ will also coordinate with Canadian National to take advantage of the same closures to carry out their work.

A shuttle service will be set up for motorcycles and small vehicles which cannot be redirected to the Pierre-Laporte bridge.

The Pierre-Laporte Bridge will not be spared by the construction season: the MTQ must carry out structural surveys by drones in May.

Full and partial bridge closures are planned at night. During these complete closures, heavy trucks will be prohibited “like the warnings of violent winds”, specifies Mme Lord.

Motorists’ patience will be tested again this summer and the MTQ invites them to “plan their trips in advance”.

“If everyone puts a little effort into it, we can limit the impacts,” argues Émilie Lord, who invites us to consider the alternatives of public transport or carpooling.
