Why the extension of the RER E will not simplify the lives of Ile-de- residents before 2025

Why the extension of the RER E will not simplify the lives of Ile-de- residents before 2025

A peak speed of 120 kilometers per hour, a station under the CNIT, in La Défense, occupying the equivalent of a lying Montparnasse tower, 35 meters deep, 8 kilometers of tunnel between Saint-Lazare and … the extension of RER E in the West of the region is a true technological feat. Inaugurated this Friday, the extension between the largest European business zone and the Gare du completes nearly nine years of titanic work.

The cost is not negligible: the new section of line E to Mantes-la-Jolie (), by 2026, should cost 5.4 billion euros. But immediately, three new stations (Porte Maillot, la Défense and Nanterre-la-Folie) will be connected to the existing network. “The opening of the RER E to La Défense will ultimately allow RER B to be relieved of congestion by 7%”welcomed Valérie Pécresse, president of Ile-de--mobilités, on March 27 during the presentation of the transport plan during the events.

Harmful delays of new trains

But behind this communication plan, just a few weeks before the start of the world sporting event, what is the reality for the people of Ile-de-France? In fact, from May 6, users will only be able to benefit from four trains per hour, only during off-peak hours, between Nanterre-La-Folie and Magenta/Rosa Parks. These first trains will in reality be ” Shuttle Buses “, running only between Nanterre and Gare du Nord (Magenta). Concretely, users coming from the east of the Ile-de-France region will have to change trains, at Gare du Nord, to continue their journey towards La Défense.

According to a press release from the communist group in the Île-de-France Region, “We will have to wait until November or even December 2024 for the extension to be truly effective, from the first to the last train and with a satisfactory offer. » The fault is a delay in delivery of “RER NG”, the new trains built by Alstom, ordered to absorb the flow of new users. Transilien only has 14 of the 34 trains ordered.

According to our information, during the Olympic and Paralympic events, the shuttle system will be supplemented by four trains during peak hours, only between Porte Maillot (Olympic multimodal hub) and Nanterre-La-Folie. Even if it is not a key line for the smooth running of the Olympic Games, the RER E will serve the Vaires-sur- nautical stadium and the Defense Aréna, for the swimming events. Above all, the Rosa Parks station is a 1 kilometer walk from the Adidas Arena at Porte de La Chapelle.
