A father and his son were sentenced Thursday to 7 and 3 and a half years in prison by the Geneva Criminal Court. They were found guilty of aggravated human trafficking. They brought people to Switzerland to make them beg.
The two defendants, who belong to the Roma community in Bulgaria, violated the freedom of human beings by taking advantage of their vulnerability for commercial purposes, the Court noted. People, very fragile, not speaking the language, found themselves stuck in Switzerland, without the possibility of returning to their country.
The father, aged 52, brought members of his family to the banks of Lake Geneva to beg, but also people who were not related to him. He recovered all or part of the money collected by his “employees”. He threatened and insulted them when the results were not up to par.
The 34-year-old son followed in his father’s footsteps, adopting the same behavior that he did, the judges noted.
