A May Day in the rain. Nearly 700 demonstrators gathered on the station square in Poitiers this Wednesday, according to the police. On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, unions are demonstrating in particular against the upcoming unemployment insurance reform.

The Olympic Games in the sights of the unions

The demonstrators are much fewer in number than last year, when the unions counted more than 14,000 people in the streets of Poitiers, mobilized against the pension reform. “Yet there are still reasons to fight“, confides a protester from Poitiers who takes to the streets to protest against the cost of living.

There unemployment insurance reform, which will come into force this fall, also returns to the discourse of trade unionists. In a “austerity climate”many union representatives denounce the prize for organizing the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the sums spent by the departments to finance the passage of the flame in Vienne and Deux-Sèvres.

Several processions in Vienne and Deux-Sèvres

Four other events are organized this Wednesday morning: in Châtellerault, Chauvigny, Niort and Bressuire. In Vienne, the rally took place at the call of the inter-union and in Deux-Sèvres, at the call of the CGT, the FSU and the Solidaires union.
