NÎMES METROPOLE “May by bike”: 70 events to raise awareness

Nîmes métropole also announced the arrival of electrically assisted bicycles for the first quarter of 2025.

May by bike is a festive event on a national scale initiated by all cycling stakeholders with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Ministry responsible for . For the second year in a row, Nîmes Métropole, which also has expertise in soft mobility, has decided to offer a local version of this operation. From 45 in 2023, more than 70 events are planned until May 31, including around 40 open to all audiences. In total, there are 27 municipalities involved in the territories of Nîmes metropolis as well as ten educational establishments.

An action carried out with cycling associations such as Croco Vélo, Roller Lib and the Cyclo Nîmois Group. On the program: initiations, walks and cycle loops to discover the heritage of the area, urban snow sports, getting back into the saddle or repair workshops, bicycle exchange, awareness of road safety… and numerous festive activities. Without forgetting the events reserved for agents, employees, schoolchildren and college students of the Agglo as well as seniors, or the May by bike challenge organized by Nîmes métropole, with an bike to be won by covering the most kilometers by bike on the territory. Electric bikes for 2025

“It is an ambitious action for the development of this mode of transport and to bring as many users as possible to practice cycling”, explains Jean-Marc Campello, vice-president of the Agglo, delegate for Mobility. The community’s ambition is to reach 100 km of roads suitable for cyclists by 20230, continue the Tango bicycle rental service and set up self-service bicycles with electric assistance. This should happen in the first quarter of 2025. The positioning of the stations for these bikes is still being considered but will be revealed in the fall.

“It’s a state of mind, a philosophy that we want to instillinsists President Franck Proust who has evolved into cycling, I was skeptical 20 years ago about cycling in Nîmes, the city of seven hills. It was a hindrance when we discussed it with people, it was difficult to make lanes for cyclists. The electric bike has changed behavior, we can now ride it in a suit and tie. We have changed our vision and also the management of the last mile. With electric vélibs, this city will finally enter the era of the 21st century. » The president even led by example during the presentation of the event (see above).

An elected official who also counts on the development of multimodal exchange centers such as in Saint-Geniès-de-Malgoirès and Générac. This operation is also the time for user associations to report certain difficulties such as getting to Chemin de Russan in complete safety. The latter hope to be contacted on future road improvement projects. Because for them, cycling is all year round!
