Gray weather and rain dominate southern Quebec this week, but it’s not much compared to what Alberta expects there.

From Tuesday morning, a depression coming from the Gulf of Alaska will deposit some snowflakes over the Western Province.

But it is especially on Wednesday, when the system will stagnate over Saskatchewan, that a flow of cold air will allow the bulk of the precipitation to fall. Heavy snowfall will cover roads Wednesday morning in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, the most urbanized area in the province.

The heaviest snowfall amounts are expected in mountainous areas along the British Columbia border, with 20 to 40 cm possible. But Calgary could still end up with 5 to 10 cm by the time the system leaves Wednesday evening.

A not so rare event

Although it is not the most popular, spring snow is not uncommon on the Prairies. In fact, it’s almost the opposite: the months of April and May are among the snowiest in the province.

SNOWIEST DAYS

Even more particular, in the list of days having received the most snow in all months combined, the first five are in April or May. The upcoming snow will fall just between the two as the system will begin on April 30th and end on May 1st.

And in Quebec?

In Quebec, spring snow is much more exceptional. On average, Gaspé and Sept-Îles receive 4.3 and 4.2 cm in May, respectively. On the Val d’Or side, we are talking about 2.6 cm, and the average drops to 0 in Montreal.
