The CNRS Alpes will open the doors of its site, on the scientific peninsula of Grenoble, to the public, Saturday October 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On this occasion, workshops for children from 8 years old will be offered. On the program: understanding symmetry using a giant kaleidoscope, discovering very low temperatures and the use of liquid nitrogen, making gels, growing crystals or even observing the brain’s cerebral activity.

Several laboratories could be visited on themes as diverse as intense magnetic fields, the characterization and development of materials in gray rooms, semiconductors used for lighting or power electronics, wave-particle duality, liquid helium, the quantum world and the different microscopes used in research to see down to the level of atoms.

Finally, the Gipsa-Lab, LPNC and Institut Néel laboratories will offer various activities around various themes such as the brain and MRI, motor performance, superconductivity, vacuum, microbes, transmission electron microscopy, properties of light, etc.

Discover the largest rotating platform in the world dedicated to fluid mechanics

© Legi – UGA

Thursday October 10 at 12:30 p.m., the public – upon registration and subject to availability – is invited to come and visit the Coriolis platform of the Geophysical and Industrial Flows Laboratory at Gières (rue de la Piscine).

It is the largest rotating platform in the world dedicated to fluid mechanics. The platform’s equipment makes it possible to represent experimentally, on a small scale, the flow of winds, tides and ocean currents to better understand natural phenomena and be able to understand climate changes.

During this visit, the public will be able to discover the force of Coriolis and attend demonstrations allowing them to visualize the formation of a cyclone.

Take part in a scientific escape game

Particle and revelations is a fun scientific popularization support for the general public, without scientific prerequisites, which takes the form of a escape game. The duration of the game is approximately 1h30. Particle and Revelations takes place in six stages, scattered throughout building 1 of the Subatomic Physics and Cosmology Laboratory, 53 avenue des Martyrs in Grenoble.
The common thread of the overall plot is the scientific approach: posing the theoretical problem; define the detector, the instrument; set up the project; carry out the measurements; analyze the data collected and communicate its results.

Each step will give rise to a series of reflections, and manipulations of objects and documents, allowing the discovery of codes and key words allowing an answer to the initial question: what happened to our colleague Cécile Quarks?

Practical

From 15 years old. Tuesday 8, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 October, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration required here.
