The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the brink of collapse in their series against the Boston Bruins and according to former coach Michel Bergeron, it will take changes if the team is eliminated in the first round.

During his Monday appearance on the “JiC” show on TVA , “Bergy” indicated that head instructor Sheldon Keefe was not the man for the job and that the club Reine needed a leader, a real one.

“In Toronto, they say they are all leaders. I’m tired of hearing that. […] Leadership is natural. When you start wanting to be a leader, you become a cheerleader, and that’s not good. In Toronto, there are too many cheerleaders,” explained Bergeron.

In his opinion, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and captain John Tavares have not been looked after well enough this season. Getting past the first round for only the second time since 2004 will be difficult with this group, he believes.

“From one year to the next, they were unable to find the goaltender they needed. To win, you need a top defender, who is above everyone else. They still have [Morgan] Rielly, who is not a bad defender after all,” admitted Bergeron.

As for Keefe, “the Tiger” is categorical: “Fired, that’s obvious!”
