Kamelot at the Théâtre Capitole de Québec

The North American tour of the American metal band Kamelot stopped this Sunday at the Théâtre Capitole in Quebec, with the groups Seven Spiers and Ad Infinitium.

The star American power metal band took the opportunity to promote The Awakening, their thirteenth studio album. The album, released more than a year ago via Napalm Records, is the band’s first studio album in five years. The last, The Shadow Theorydates from 2018. It is also the largest gap between two studio albums since the group’s formation in 1991.

The visual signature and staging of Kamelot have nothing to envy of the shows in large amphitheaters. The immense standard bearing the image of the cover of The Awakening, the immense columns of smoke as well as the powerful lighting system, in addition to the medieval style decorations, have everything to create a most theatrical atmosphere. The arrival of the chorus girl dressed in the image of the character on the cover adds a touch of mystery as her choreographed movements are cabalistic. Later in the evening, two priestesses all dressed in red invite Adrienne Cowan from Seven Spiers to come sing with Tommy Karevik.

For gossip, know that Karevik is the husband of Canadian singer Kobra Paige (Kobra and the Lotus). He is also well known for his recurring work with Arjen Lucassen’s project Ayreon.

The Capitol is not full this evening, but the crowd gathered is most receptive to the performance of Kamelot’s songs. With their fists raised high in the air, the fans beat time to the frenzied rhythms of the group’s anthems and big hits.

A performance that runs at the speed of sound propelled by the thundering speakers of the theater. Cell phones turn on to Willow, taken from the new album, followed by NightSky. Alex Landenburg then performs a long drum solo against a soundtrack worthy of the greatest epic films. He will be joined by keyboardist Oliver Palotai and the other members of the group for the magnificent March of Mephisto accompanied once again by the diva Adrienne Cowan.

Thomas Youngblood, installed in the rood screen, begins the first notes of Forever and quickly descends to the rhythm of Alex Landenburg’s double-time drums to complete what will be the last song of the evening. As a bonus: a segment of We Will Rock You by Queen. Karevik allows himself to vocalize with the fans and that is what ends the concert. But we lose nothing by waiting: the reminders are coming!

As a second encore, the virtuoso singer proudly brandishes the fleurdelisé flag to More Flag in the Ground.

Ad Infinitum

Swiss singer Melissa Bonny and Ad Infinitum begin the metal hostilities at around 7 p.m. Although he has a piercing and powerful voice, his throat singing technique is not really convincing at the start of the performance.

Ad Infinitum is here to take us on a journey through their musical universe with the three chapters of the Monarchy trilogy, Legacy and finally Downfall, released in 2023.

Melissa, a 31-year-old singer, is also known for her work in the project The Dark Side of the Moon, which published the album Metamorphosis in 2023 via Napalm Records. The Swiss/German symphonic metal band was originally a solo project of Swiss singer Melissa Bonny. It transformed into a complete band with the arrival of Adrian Theßenvitz (guitars), Niklas Müller (drums) and more recently Korbinian Benedict (bass), who now replaces Jonas Asplind in the group.

She does not miss the opportunity to speak in French during this short, intense and impactful 30-minute performance. A great way to start an evening of pure metal.

Seven Spiers

Seven Spiers features elements of many styles and genres of metal, including melodic death metal and black metal. The band’s music centers around concept albums that generally take place in the same fictional universe.

Their next album, A Fortress Called Homewill be available on June 21.

Seven Spiers, with Adrienne Cowan in the lead, pours its guttural and lyrical venom from the first song, accompanied by its gods of mass musical destruction. The 29-year-old singer has perfect mastery of the different facets of her vocal art.

Like singer Melissa Bonny of Ad Infinitum, the bassist of the infernal quartet, Peter de Reyna, welcomes fans from Quebec in the most impeccable French.

Melissa Bonny will join Seven Spiers for the play Lightbringer, taken from the upcoming new opus. Architech of Creation, also from the new album, pierces our fragile eardrums of weak mortals. The voice is insane!

The Capitol crowd is won over following Seven Spires’ devastating performance. The table was set for the five metallic knights of Kamelot.

An epic evening featuring great singers of different, but complementary, styles. Their undeniable charisma, combined with the contribution of exceptional and experienced musicians, allowed spectators to witness a damn fine metallic evening!
