A woman in her sixties died as a result of her injuries sustained in a fire on Sunday morning in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, in Montérégie.

Police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (S.Q.) were called to go to a residence on Bélanger Street which was engulfed in flames, around 9 a.m.

The victim suffered significant injuries. She was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, said Hélène St-Pierre, spokesperson for the S.Q..

An investigation is being conducted by the Major Crimes Investigation Division of the S.Q.. No hypothesis as to the cause of the fire is favored at this time.

A fire scene technician was to go to the scene of the tragedy in the afternoon.
