, April 29, 2024 /CNW/ – IRIS today unveils the 10e sustainable income edition which tells us that it takes between 30 $738 and $43,609 per year for a single person to live out of poverty in Quebec.

According to Eve-Lyne Couturier, researcher at IRIS and author of the study: “The calculation of viable income indicates what a dignified standard of living represents, beyond just covering basic needs. This means in particular being able to make choices and being able to deal with unforeseen circumstances. »

Sustainable income in 2024 according to household type and location

In 2024, the viable income calculated for a single person is between 30 $738 and 43 $609 and ranges between $72,788 and $86,585 for a family of four. Montreal is the city that recorded the largest increase in viable income in the last year, an increase of 19.3%, followed closely by Saguenay, Gatineau And Sherbrooke. In all the situations examined, the variation in the cost of the basket between 2023 and 2024 is higher than the general rate of inflation.

Up to 25% more expensive for families moving

This year, IRIS included in its calculation a moving bonus which better reflects market prices for rental accommodation in a context of skyrocketing rents.

In Montreal, the amounts planned for housing increase by an average of 25% for families with children who have moved in the last year. Significant moving penalties are also recorded in the cities of Quebec and Gatineau.

$20 to $30 per hour to live with dignity in Quebec

Although the minimum wage will be increased by $0.50 starting on 1er May, a person who works full time at minimum wage will still not have the money needed to live a life free of poverty.

“We tend to believe that working is enough to escape poverty, but our economy creates a category of poor workers who, even if they work 50 hours a week, struggle to meet their needs,” deplores the researcher.
