A 68-year-old British Columbia driver is believed to be fighting for her life following a head-on collision she caused when she drove into the wrong lane of a highway in the wrong direction early Sunday.

“Alcohol and a pre-existing health condition are believed to be contributing factors in the collision,” RCMP Staff Sergeant Tyner Gillies said in a statement on Sunday, according to the Vancouver Sun.

It is a stone’s throw from Vancouver, in the Surrey sector, that the 68-year-old woman allegedly drove in the opposite direction on Sunday, around 4:15 a.m., at the junction between highways 99 and 91, according to the English-speaking media.

The sixty-year-old, in a Ford Sedan, then allegedly collided with a Mercedes Sedan, causing heavy damage to both vehicles.

The driver at fault was reportedly rushed to a hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, according to the Vancouver Sunwhile the driver of the other vehicle and his passenger suffered only minor injuries, however requiring transport to hospital as well.

The RCMP also appealed to the public to obtain windshield camera images, which could shed light on the circumstances of the incident.
