Nazi tags, including swastikas and an inscription ” Heil Hitler “were discovered on the monument to the martyrs of the resistance and deportation of Sète (Hérault), we learned on Sunday April 28, from a police Source. “Swastikas and offensive inscriptions were noted”the interdepartmental direction of the Police (DIPN) told Agence -Presse (AFP), confirming information from the regional daily Free Midday.

It was the municipal police of Sète who became aware of the tags late Saturday afternoon and “reports of findings [étaient] in progress on Sunday afternoon, so that the city of Sète can file a complaint”added the DIPN.

The Sète investigation unit is also responsible for searching for possible testimonies or videos. In photos posted online by Free Midday we can see at least three swastikas in different places and an inscription ” Heil Hitler “.

“Shame on those who dared to once again degrade the monument to the Martyrs of the Resistance and Deportation in Sète. It is an insult to the descendants of the deportees on this national day of homage” which is held in France every last Sunday in April, the prefect of Hérault wrote on the social network

“People who know very well what they have done”

Last November a tag “SS” had already been traced on a plaque on the monument.

“I am very shocked by the degradation of a very symbolic monument, which occurred the day before the National Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Deportation”, reacted to AFP Sébastien Denaja, Socialist Party (PS) regional councilor for the region and elected opposition official from Sète. He considered that this date suggested that the vandalism had been committed “by people who know very well what they have done”.

“With Carole Delga, president (PS) of the Occitanie region, we hope that the conclusions of the investigation will make it possible to identify the culprits and sentence them severely”he continued, expressing his emotion “as an elected official, as a citizen and as the grandson of a resistance fighter”.
