Ecomobility involves carpooling and the development of bicycles, multimodal stations, bus lines and express coaches, etc., but also through the development of electric cars. Essonne wants to develop this mode of transport on its territory, but it is starting from afar. “We have too few electric cars in Essonne compared to the national objective of 15% of cars by 2030,” explains Nicolas Méary, mayor of Brétigny-sur-Orge and vice-president of the departmental council in charge. of the ecological transition. We were at 1.7% on January 1, 2023 – and around 2.4% today – which means that we would have to multiply this number by six in six years!”

One way to achieve this is to give new buyers of electric vehicles the opportunity to recharge them, via Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles (IRVE) terminals. Except that Essonne is also lacking, since there is currently only one for 22 electric cars. Furthermore, the existing terminals are mainly located in the northern part of the department, the most urbanized, while the needs are more diffuse across the territory.

Particular attention to rural areas

The difficulty lies in the fact that it is the intermunicipal energy unions which are competent in this matter. But if the department cannot act directly, except on its own land (public services, college car parks, etc.), it can still finance implementation projects. This year, 500,000 euros are being put on the table, a sum which should increase in the years to come.

“We have too few electric cars compared to the national objective of 15% by 2030. We are at 2.4%.”

“We want projects to respect a certain number of principles such as territorial coverage, with particular attention to rural areas where there is less public transport. We also want the pricing to be affordable, transparent and for there to be interoperability between the different IRVE subscriptions in the region, underlines Nicolas Méary. Finally, we have an environmental requirement, including respecting zero net artificialization and the priority use of renewable energy: solar panels, but also geothermal energy, methanization.” The first projects funded through the department should be launched next fall.
